Future Clothes Could Use Engineered Scents to Change Mood and Enhance Memory

These futuristic clothes will be able to put you into any mood you desire. What they do is they give off special aromatherapy fragrances that are each designed to put you into a specific mood, whether it be calm, focused, happy, etc. Also, biometric sensors can be attached to the clothing so that the wearer's heart rate and stress levels can be detected. According to the stress level, the appropriate aroma will be emitted to keep the wearer at a happy medium. Also, as the sense of smell provokes the memory more directly than any other sense, the concept clothing can also help keep elder people's minds stay sharp. The person behind this idea is Jenny Tillotson, who wanted a scent bubble to follow behind the patients in the hospital to get their minds off the "smell of death", leading to a speedy recovery. As of now, the idea of scented clothing is purely conceptual, but Tillotson is working hard to make it a reality.

Gravity Powered Car

First, I Got four empty XS energy drink cans, two large, and two normal size. Then, I glued them together to form the base of the car. After that was done, I drilled holes into them for the axels. For the axels, I used two pencils. For the wheels, I used the tops of yogurt containers, two large, and two normal size. I inserted the axels into the body, then glued the wheels firmly to the axels. After that, I glued nine AA batteries to the bottom of the car for extra weight. When this was done, I covered the two front cans with plastic wrap. On top of the plastic wrap, I glued a bent piece of cardboard to make it more aerodynamic. Then I covered the open sides of the tip of the car with tin foil. After ths was done, I gave the wheels more friction with rubber bands. When all this was done, I decorated the car with fire and spray paint.

Fish Skin Alleles Lab Analysis

In the lab we saw how different alleles can help and organism or put them in harm's way. We also saw how environmental disasters and different environments can affect organisms. Specifically, the organisms were fish living in a lush and green stream. The green fish were able to camouflage into the seaweed and algae very well, so they avoided being eaten up by hungry predators. The orange and red fish were also able to pass unnoticed by predators. However, the yellow fish were extremely noticeable against the green environment and were found by bigger fish very quickly.

An Environmental Disaster

Despite the previous well being of the green skinned fish, the environment turned on it heals and a disaster occurred. Factory waste was dumped into the stream which killed all the seaweed and algae hence revealing the sand and rocks. The rocks and sand provided great camouflage for the yellow, orange, and red fish, but the green fish were not as lucky. Without the seaweed and algae, they had nothing to camouflage into, and therefore, no protection from predators. In effect, the alleles for green skin started to disappear and the alleles for red and yellow skin started to show up more.

Suggestions

If this lab were to be done again in the future, I would make it so that in addition to the yellow fish, the orange fish would also not be able to camouflage into the seaweed and algae. Also, I would give the yellow fish more alleles for means of defense (whatever that may be). These means of defense would only be able to protect the yellow fish 50% of the time. If the yellow fish were about to be put into the morgue, the student would flip a coin to determine whether the means of defense succeeds--heads it does, and tails it doesn't.

A Solid Discovery

http://sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/69125/title/FOR_KIDS_A_solid_discovery

Hot_planet.jpg

Most of us think there are nine planets orbiting the sun, but there are others outside of the solar system called exoplanets. Over 500 of them have already been discovered, but recently, a more important one has been discovered. In Seattle during January, astronomers confirmed that the newly discovered planet is solid, unlike any of the others which are either unknown or made of gas. This planet is called Kepler-10b. It is 656 light years away, has a diameter 40% larger than the Earth's, and its mass is 4 times the Earth's. Kepler's orbit isery close to its star, so it is extremely hot, and cannot support liquid water, for it will evaporate. Astronomers found this planet by using the Heck telescope, which is located at the top of a dormant volcano in Hawaii. Astronomers are very excited about finding this planet in specific because it is the only one discovered so far that is solid like the Earth.

2011 Tech Trends

In 2011, many new gaming, communication, and transportation machine/devices will be gaining and losing popularity. Also, there might be yet another way to purchase merchandise. First, there is the electric car, which according to ABI research will most likely remain unused. This is because of the fear of driving too far away from a charging station and not being able to make it back home. Also, The radio and air conditioning can shorten battery life. Lastly, it is expensive from the beginning, and since it is new, auto dealers will mark the price up very much.

2011 will be a major year in the gaming world because each popular gaming companies are stepping it up a notch. Nintendo is coming out with the Nintendo 3Ds, a 3D version of the Nintendo DSi and possibly a new Wii! Sony has put in their part by coming out with the Playstation Move, and topping it off, the Kinect by Xbox.

When it comes to phones, the Apple iPhone and Android-based phones are leading. The sole reason the Android-based phones might be better is that the iPhone is flawed in security terms and cannot support some of the behind-the-firewall apps that are seen on the RIM platform.

Lastly, Mankind has used many items as money. We have also used credit and debit cards to substitute for our money. Now, some phone can accomplish many jobs with the help of applications. Guess what? Now, in 2011, we will be able to pay with our phones.

The algae on the right side of tree trunk is a symbiotic example of mutualism due to the fact that the algae and the tree are benefiting. This is because the algae needs the tree to live, and the tree is receiving protection.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

This population of trees is a biotoc limiting factor because it limits the amount of oxygen in the air, which could limit creatures which need oxygen to survive. Also, the trees limit the amount of water in the soil. Even sunlight is limited under the canopy of trees.

Response to Aquarium

At the aquarium, we went to numerous displays. Here are some of the many I especially enjoyed.

  • Touch pools
  1. sharks
  2. rays
  3. jellyfish
  4. starfish
  • Shark tunnel
  1. hammerheads
  2. needle fish
  3. rays
  • crab that looked so much like a giant spider that lives in water :) I think its called a spider crab
  • piranhas-you can see the skeletons of their food!!!! I hope they weren't fake for the effect...
  • vultures-for the humor
  • the penguins were especially bboorriinngg! The only exciting thing about them was that two of them started fighting for...about two seconds.
  • seals
  • sea horse

Is Air There? (10pts)

In this lab, we had a jar, two rubber bands, and a Ziploc bag. First, we covered the top of the jar with the Ziploc bag, then, we held the bag to the jar by putting the rubber bands around the bag on the jar. After this set up was done, someone pushed down into the jar. The air in the jar made this hard. This is because air takes up space just like anything else. The rubber bands made it hard for the air to escape. After pushing, we pulled. Pulling the bag was hard too because pulling the bag would mean a need for more space, but since there is only so much, it took time to get more in there.

Response to Recent Article about Greenhouse Effect (15pts)

The earth is not too cold, not too hot, but just. Nevertheless, this is a delicate balance. Now we know that gases produced by smokestack industries, the internal combustion engine, and the like could dramatically warm the air, because those gases contain co2 (carbon dioxide) and methane. When the sun emits its UV radiation towards the earth, many encounters occur such as
  • co2 and methane trap heat by absorbing the sun's rays
  • transparent air let most sunlight through, but 30% is bounced back by atmosphere, earth's surface, clouds, and particles of the air
  • bright snow reflects sunlight back into space
  • ocean and land mostly absorb

Greenhouse gases grab thermal radiation, echo some of it back down to the warm ground, and ultimately, the heat gets trapped. Thick clouds reflect the sunlight back into space, but thin clouds trap the sunlight just like greenhouse gases.

If we don't do anything about our constantly emitted greenhouse gases, we could and up like Venus, a greenhouse disaster.

I think that if we don't stop this disaster in the making, I don't even want to think about the suicides that would take place, the deaths of plants that wouldn't be able to stand the weather, and ultimately, the end.

Convection Popcorn Lab (10pts)

For this lab, we put a brown bag full of popcorn kernels into microwave, and then let the microwave do its job for a minute and thirty seconds. During that time, the microwave gave off radiations, which is the process in which energy is emitted as particles or waves. Radiation travels through space until it has reached a object to penetrate. In this case, the microwave emitted the radiation into the space in the microwave, and enough radiation eventually reached the popcorn kernels to the point at which they popped.

Temperature Interactive (10pts)

http://forces.si.edu/atmosphere/interactive/atmosphere.html

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that takes up less than 1% of the atmosphere, but it is needed to keep the earth warm. Carbon dioxide retains the heat that would have escaped out of the atmosphere. This greenhouse effect is the reason that the earth is warm enough to sustain life. Carbon dioxide comes from many things such as volcanoes, car exhausts, factories, power plants, and decaying plants and animals. Many of the animals that lived 350 million years ago became buried in swamps before they could decay. Eventually, they become oil, natural gas, and coal. And when we burn these fuels, they quickly release their carbon dioxide. Mars and Venus are almost all carbon dioxide.
Oxygen was formed when the sun's ultraviolet radiation broke apart molecules of water, but today we get oxygen when green plants use the sun's energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.
The ozone is the reason evolution took place from water animals to land animals. This is because before the ozone came about, the sun's harmful UV radiation still penetrated earth, and the animals were safe from it underwater. But when oxygen was formed, so did the ozone, which blocked the ultraviolet radiation from coming down to earth. But in the 1980s, chemicals in aerosol sprays and refrigerants thinned the ozone layer in the stratosphere, and more UV radiation was able to reach earth.

Collapsing Can Lab (10pts)

First, we filled a soda can with two bottle caps of water, then placed the can on a burner. Once water vapor started coming from the top, we counted down from thirty. After we reached one, a person took the tongs and flipped the can into a saucepan filled with cold water. Immediately after the can was in the water, the can's sides contracted to the center of the can.

This implosion occurred because when water was boiled, or made hot, the molecules spread farther apart from each other. When the can was plopped into the cold water, the molecules went from really far apart to really close so fast, it sucked the edges of the can to center with them.

Super Bug! World's Strongest Insect Revealed

The beetle(Onthophagus Taurus) can pull 1141 times its body weight. That's the same as a 150lb. person lifting six full double decker buses. The females build tunnels in which they use cow droppings to lay their eggs in. In this tunnel, mating, premating fights between the waiting males takes place. Some males aren't the most fit for the fight. They don't have horns like the others. Instead of fighting, they build their own tunnels on the side and sneak in to mate. The beetles with horns are naturaly named the major males.
